C.P. Company Jackets – The Origins of the Luxury Outerwear
Massimo Osti founded what was to become C.P. Company in 1971, under the name “Chester Perry.” The name comes from a factory in British cartoonist Frank Huiline-Dickens’ renowned comic strip “Bristow.” Osti had previously been employed as a graphic designer and created attractive advertising designs and fun company prizes and gifts. He used his graphic design skills to print clothing items, ingeniously adapting techniques for printing on paper.
In the early 1970s, Massimo Osti and his associates established a special process for colouring garments made from different types of materials. This treatment became known as “garment dyeing” in 1973. Using this method, a finished piece of clothing is dyed after it has been made, in contrast to the traditional method of creating a garment from pre-dyed fabrics. This process is more time-consuming, since each piece needs to be dyed individually, but it yields a more impressive result, with more intense and vibrant colors. The colours take on more complexity, with subtle nuances and hues that give a profound depth and more striking look. Since Osti and his collaborators created items made from various types of materials, the garment dyeing process enhanced the natural qualities of each fabric. This dynamic and attractive color depth features strongly in C.P. Company jackets along with various other kinds of apparel.
In 1978, Massimo changed the brand’s name from “Chester Perry” to C.P. Company. With this more refined name, the label launched a series of legendary designs that attracted a considerable following among Italy’s most creative and scholarly contemporaries.
Pockets – Combining Functionality and Aesthetics
The way that C.P. Company jackets feature pockets in their exclusive designs showcases its superior functional aesthetic. For this Italian brand, pockets might just be its ideal symbol of the hybridization of performance and style. The creative placement, features and style of the pockets are so sleek that they are even breathtaking to look at, as they demonstrate such superior craftsmanship and design. Many of the label’s jacket models have box pockets with button flap closures. Box pockets are also known as cargo pockets. They are a specific style of pocket – a form of patch pocket – that typically has accordion folds. In creating a cargo pocket, instead of simply sewing a single front piece of fabric onto a jacket’s surface, the designer sews on a front piece that also has 3 sides as well as a top flap closure. This structure makes them larger in capacity and able to hold more items.
The first edition of the 500 Miglia Multi Pockets Goggle Jacket was the most iconic Goggle jacket design in all the C.P. Company collections of the 2000s. 1950’s Swiss Army Field jackets were the prototype that inspired the very first coats the label created. The 500 Miglia Multi Pockets Goggle Jacket included many similar features, but in a more compact and slimmer silhouette. With the compressed shape, the arrangement of the four large front pockets brings them closer together, adding a unique design element to a functional feature. Different kinds of pockets proliferate among other pieces in the C.P. Company jacket collections, including more traditional pockets, zippered pockets, double pockets, and sleeve pockets. Some pockets have flaps with a button snap, traditional button closure, Velcro, or without any type of fastener. There are also various inner pockets, like the game pocket on the inside of the Hybrid Hunting and Sahariana Jacket. The diversity in pocket styles comes as close to a decorative feature as exists on any of the C.P. Company jackets. Paul Harvey, the brand’s creative director, underscores this intentional design simplicity with his mantra: “don’t decorate it.”
