STELLA MCCARTNEY

Vibrant, feminine, dynamic and conscious – these are four key words that typify the exclusive, eponymous collections of leading British designer, Stella McCartney. Her innovative interpretation of contemporary femininity and conscious fashion has rocketed her collections to legendary status within the international fashion industry. This pioneering designer continues to expand her ideas of fashion, and her environmental focus and sustainable pieces demonstrate her commitment and passion for protecting the planet. She has set an example for how big businesses can make a significant impact in helping to keep the earth clean and green. Renowned for her select “vegan fashion,” fashion enthusiasts hold Stella McCartney collections in high regard for their fur- and leather-free pieces.

Stella McCartney’s designer label presents an expansive range of women’s, men’s, children’s and unisex clothing, handbags, accessories, shoes, as well as her own line of beauty products. These comprehensive collections have literally got you covered in stylish apparel from top to toe, no matter whether it is coats and jackets, knitwear, dresses, sweatshirts and T-shirts, shirts and tops, denim, skirts, swimwear, or lingerie and sleepwear. One of the designer’s most well-known collaborations is with adidas. These effervescent sportswear collections for women include everything from trainers and joggers to swimwear and gym bags and everything in between. Adidas by Stella McCartney features clean lines, striking silhouettes, and dynamic pops of colour, while delivering high-performance quality with an innovative use of sustainable materials.

Stella McCartney – Living up to her Name

Born in 1971 in London, the now well-known designer was named after her maternal great-grandmother. The child of celebrity parents, she is the daughter of the legendary Beatles member, Paul McCartney, and photographer and animal-rights activist, Linda McCartney. Stella studied at the Christian Lacroix fashion house in Paris, and the jaw-dropping show she produced as the culmination of her training there earned her early accolades and status in the fashion industry. With the ensuing fame, she was soon assigned the task of putting a new face on Chloé in 1997, an exclusive label that had been established nearly half a century earlier. Soaring success was the reward of her efforts, as her romantic-themed collections became instantaneously popular. Her status in the fashion realm was unarguably high-profile from then on, and she began attracting a significant following of celebrity customers.

In a 2001 collaboration with the haute-couture Gucci label, Stella McCartney established an eponymous fashion house and launched her first major collection in Paris. After this pioneering assortment, the innovative designer established other product lines including beauty products and intimate apparel for women. In 2003, she presented Stella perfume, and an organic skincare line called CARE in 2007. 2008, 2010 and 2016 marked the years she respectively introduced a collection of lingerie, a line of children’s clothing, and select menswear. A lifelong vegetarian, the designer’s collections and lines feature cruelty-free pieces. Her passion for the planet is a predominant inspiration in her life that strongly influences her conscious approach to her work. In 2018, she launched the Stella McCartney Cares Foundation, dedicated to breast cancer – the illness her mother succumbed to in 1998.

A Passion for Sustainability

Stella McCartney has been at the forefront of creating state-of-the-art collections with sustainable materials, and attests that “preserving and respecting the planet is fundamental to what I do.” Her collections have featured pieces made from recycled materials, including trainers and backpacks constructed from ocean plastic. Her 2023 line even includes an innovative leather alternative based on grapes and a bag crafted out of mycelium. The ocean plastic trainers and backpacks use a special yarn made from “Parley Ocean Plastic,” a 100% upcycled material made from items such as bottles, fishing nets, and other debris. This unique, sustainable plastic is an outcome of concerted efforts by Parley for the Oceans, a non-profit organisation.

The sustainable trainers are called the “Adidas Ultraboost X” model, and have marked a turning point in the fashion industry. Since their debut on World Oceans Day in 2017, these innovative, high-performance trainers have escalated in popularity. They are now available in a wide selection of styles and colours, like the Ultraboost x Marimekko version, which sports the vibrant, bold design of the famous Finnish design house. Made of upcycled nylon that looks and feels just like virgin nylon, the luxury Falabella Go backpack is a signature item from Stella McCartney’s collections. Glue-free shoes are another sustainable innovation, which use specially designed hooks to hold the sole together to the bottom of the shoe. Conventional glues used for manufacturing shoes typically are not environmentally-friendly, as they can contain toxins that are difficult to break down. After three years of dedicated efforts, the British designer presented yet another circular product in her line-up: sustainable viscose. Sourced from a Swedish forest that has been certified according to sustainability regulations, this modern viscose helps to further protect Mother Nature’s precious resources.

“Most Responsible Collection to Date”

The recent showcase of Stella McCartney’s Spring/Summer 2023 collection marked another momentous occasion in fashion history. Produced with as much as 87% conscious materials and a regenerative cotton garment, this collection marked the designer’s “most responsible collection to date.” In line with the environmentally focussed apparel, the reveal took place in an outdoor location – which was a new move for the exclusive label. In line with the pioneering trends of this special 2023 collection, some pieces also featured the work of Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara, whose slogan, “Change the History,” McCartney was especially inspired by.

Stella McCartney’s consciousness of the planet and the creatures that live on it is impressive and inspiring. Her determination and commitment to sustainability and cruelty-free collections have proven her to be a role model in the fashion industry. Reflecting her penchant for a plant-based lifestyle, one of the adidas jackets in her collection has the words, 'suitable for sporty vegetarians,' running down one sleeve. The British designer infuses sustainable practices in many areas of her fashion house. For example, she has fully biodegradable mannequins and foam furniture made of recycled materials in her flagship store in London.
